Sweeney’s Pub on Conowingo Road in Conowingo, suffered minor damage after a blaze broke out in an exterior trash can Friday morning, temporarily pausing operations at the beloved restaurant and bar, according to investigators.

The fire, which began around 8 a.m. on Dec. 20, was quickly controlled by the Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company.

Thirty firefighters responded to the single-alarm blaze and had it under control within 20 minutes, though it caused an estimated $5,000 in damage for the owners.

The pub was closed for repairs on Friday, but officials said the owner hopes to reopen as early as Saturday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though a discarded cigarette cannot be ruled out, according to the fire marshal.
